OT (kinda)-Tax question -disabled child

Feb 11, 2007 4 Replies

I have a 13 (almost 14) year old daughter who is learning disabled. I am not sure what the State of NY offcially classifies her as. She is in special ed. She is capable of taking care of herself to a degree. I would not leave her alone for more than an hour or so at a time. I have always taken the deduction for child care as my wife and I both work. I want to continue to take this credit and have read what I could find on the IRS site about it. Do I need to prove something ahead of time to the IRS, do I need supporting paperwork? What do I need to continue taking this credit without running into problems? Thanks.

I think you should be ok w/receipts from the childcare providor, just make sure their ssn or tax id number is on the receipt... as the IRS will be interested to check and verify they are claiming the income you deduct...as that is when the IRS will "collect their cut" of tax $ .......

Thanks for the reply. Do you mean that I should send receipts in with my taxes?

no, don't send them in w/return...just keep them in your tax file w/other 2006 stuff...in the event you are asked for them years later, in an audit....

Thanks again. I would think that having the credit and an over 13 year old child would trigger something automatically. I used the word something, because I just can't bring myself to say audi*.
