Quickbooks for tracking in maintenance dept?

Jan 19, 2006 5 Replies

I work in the maint dept of a local factory

Our requisition and ERP system is crap. Clumsy and hard to get info out of but we must use it. So what we do is keep track of things we order using an Excel sheet. Needless to say this Excel sheet becomes MASSIVE and slows and hard to navigate. But believe it or not is more useful to extract info from than our ERP system!!

Having said that I was curious if we bought a version of Quiickbooks for our on internal use if that would give us the ease of use and reports we need?

Good idea? Work?

Me,

Please detail what you are tracking, how you are tracking it, and what you would like to.

Thanks,

Arnold

Above are some headings on our excel sheet

But we are getting so much data that excel is bogging down

I could use Access I suppose

But I was just wondering if we could use something like Quickbooks and get even MORE power and reports

Again this would be for maint dept use only as the ERP system accounting uses is terrible.

Quickbooks sucks.. And if you have that much data, it probably wouldn't be any faster even if it did do what you need.

Spend a few hours and create an Access database, or thow it on SQL server. You have far more reporting features as you can create your own.

And, what ERP system are you using? The middle market software has great abilities, so I don't know why your ERP system wouldn't.

Yeah that's a good idea above and one Id thought of. Then maybe use Crystal Reports to pull reports from it?

Umm..... I think it's called Syteline. It just plain sucks as far as reports. Either that or IT doesn't have it setup, correct

At any rate the maint dept has to keep separate records of what is bought just so we can see what we got, when we got it, etc

I believe Access would be your best solution. You have complete control to customize the app to your particular needs, rather than try to suit your needs to a "canned" system. I don't know how "complicated" your system is, so make your own decision as to whether you want to tackle building your own Access system. For just "flat" record keeping, it wouldn't be that difficult. But, if your app is more complicated, there will be a substantial learning curve to overcome that may make a "grow your own" application less desirable.

That's what I (and others) do for a living... we write custom apps in Access for clients who can't find "off the shelf" applications to handle their specific business needs. Check around in your area for consultants who would be able to develop that Access app for you. Try the web or Yellow Pages under Computer Services. It might be a bit more expensive up front, but you'll get the app built more quickly, built to suit your particular needs, and... it should start paying for itself right off the bat in saved time and labor.
