Barcode Labeling Individual Items

If I buy a separate barcode/labeler/printer device, can I customize POS or RMS to print a barcode label for each individual item sold. I have a repair shop, and I want to barcode each item that comes in (even though there may be

5 'items' per transaction)?

How about using Serial Numbers? If you are using a Zebra, Cognitive or other label printer with a text based programing language, you can add a barcode for the serial number. If you use a windows driver based printer and label, I don't believe that you can add a barcode for anything other than the LookupCode.

The alternative would be to create a unique item for each repair item you are receiving. That might actually be better for you as you would then be able to use the Bin Location field to actually track the location of the specific part...

I am using a generic text only driver - so I understand the serial numbers may not work for me.

Creating unique items - that would allow me to use the Bin Location field would be ideal!

I entered all my repair services as noninventory items, but I am not sure that was a really good idea. What I would like to do is - automatically generate a unique id # with the ability to associate one or more repair services to that unique id (with bin location field - so that any rep could find the item when the customer returns).

Is this possible?

How about tracking item notes and recording item notes on your workorders; we use this feature to sell a special order item on a workorder, where ctrlF10 allows you to enter extensive notes/comments about the line item; in manager

I definitely intend to track & record item notes, but can I barcode each item that comes in for repair? Can I scan a barcode from the service list and associate it with a unique item?

This is the dealbreaker for me.

Vonya, you could try testing using serialized items without a price or a cost, as a way of tracking items in and out of the inventory and when the customer brings in the repair item, use the "repair" misc item, system will prompt you to put in the serial number, change the qty to negative to add it to your inventory (or optionally use a return receipt where you would leave the qty as a positive) - the return will add the item to stock, where you can print the serial number labels by accessing the serial tab in the item properties, then clicking labels, the system will walk you through your options...you'll need to enable "allow serial item creation at POS: in file - configuration (manager program) for this to work

Test this after hours if you can - you may also want to create a "test> I definitely intend to track & record item notes, but can I barcode each item

The Text Only driver is good for this scenario. You can add an additional barcode that represents the Serial Number (Actually up to 3 s/n per item). You have to be using a large enough label to fit both barcodes though. You should be able to download a programming guide from the printer manufacturer's web site, or you can just copy the line from the .lbl file that prints the Item Lookup Code and adjust it to print a Serial Number instead.

Unique Items work well as long as there aren't too many of them. If you bring in thousands of repair items per year you are going to end up with a lot of 'clutter' in you DB. You do get the Bin Location, Extended Description and Notes Fields to describe the item and the repair as fully as you need. Biggest problem with this is actually workflow - do you have time to create an item at the time the item comes in? If you decide to go this route, create a Template Item and preselect as much as possible; Department, Category, Bar Code Format, etc. Put place holders in any fields that you want the cashier to enter descriptions into like "Enter Repair Details Here" or "Enter Shelf Number". Rather than using the "New" button to create your incoming items, select the Template Item and use "Copy" - be careful, some properties may copy over that you don't really want, like inventory or committed numbers. There are add-ins available that will allow you to have SKUs auto-generated, and code was posted here recently to create a trigger (although I don't necessarily recommend that).

I believe the best way to associate services to an item is through a Work Order. Each Service is an Item. The services are non-inventory, but the item you are repairing is not. Add the Item being repaired and any services needed to the work order. If you wanted to create a 'package' of services, you could use an Assembly Item to group a set of service items together - when you add the assembly Item to the order, each of the service items will be added as a separate line item. See the Online help for more details...

The solution that convoluted gave about using Item Notes may be the simplest to work with, but you are not going to be able to get those notes onto a label unless you use software other than RMS to print.
