Custom Label w/ Barcode

I was wondering if there was a way to make a custom label that would have a barcode generated from the alias. The way we have things set up, all the items have their barcode placed in the alias section. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Problem is, which Alias? You can list many, so you would have to somehow identify which Alias.

I wouldn't look for a change in RMS soon.

I helped another user move his Primary UPCs from Alias table to Item table some time ago and would recommend you do the same.

Where in the item table did you put the alias info? And what happens if the barcode changes? And thanks for the quick response.

The Alias that you want to use on the label has to be in the Item Lookup Code field. I would hope you are using the UPC as listed on the item you are selling. So the current ILC will probably be moved to the Alias table and the Primary UPC will be moved to the ILC field in the Item table. I used Access to do this work and I would offer the usual advice of backing up before you start.

If the barcode changes you move the old barcode to Alias table and the new barcode becomes the ILC. This routine maintenance is done through manager of course and it's practice allows you to keep a historical record of what UPCs have been used for a given item. Remember you can have many many Aliases. Keeping the old UPCs on file also aids in returns and the sale of old "un-rotated" merchandise.

In practice, sometimes when you try to replace an ILC with a new number and move the old ILC to an Alias, you have to:

1.) Copy old ILC to clipboard or better yet to a program like Notepad. 2.) Enter the new ILC. 3.) Close the record. 4.) Open the record and then paste the old ILC to an Alias. We've noticed that sometimes we can do all this in one opening of the record but if you have any trouble follow the steps above.

In general I understand why users advocate putting stock numbers or some kind of meaningful numbers in the ILC field. They are probably the numbers we use more often and may even commit to memory. Unfortunately we have a limited view of fields in Manager (or F2 in POS) so we are tempted to put these in ILC so they are part of the view. But when we run into problems such as what you've encountered with label printing we see that the program was written with certain practices in mind.

I would like to see Microsoft publish some best practices to be followed when using their POS Software. It works either way but using it the way it was designed causes a lot less grief. Finally, if we had the ability to see more fields in the Manager (or F2 in POS) View we would be able to satisfy more users as to what they can see.
