Barcode Scanner

Hi Folks

After working with RMS for awhile we are thinking of getting a barcode scanner for a low volume retail business. Required to be able to read fairly small barcodes and preferably inexpensive. Should it be keyboard wedge or USB? Any suggestion on what model to buy?

In addition , does any barcode scanner come with software - so that it could be used on a laptop for doing inventory ( to generate CSV file)? If not, any open source software for this kind of inventory counting application?

We use a Metrologic MS9520 Keybaord wedge scanner and have very little problems. I currently have about 90 units installed. I have used USB and they seem to work as well however I need to keep my USB ports for othe devices..

I also use these scanners in a busy garden centre environment, have had very few issues to date - highly recomended. I use a mixture of usb and keyboard wedge models, to be honest you wont know the difference, its more a question of having enough usb ports for everything...

hope this helps..

Have a look at

The CountThat PC version can do that. there is a trial on the site.

My recommendation is USB, why not future proof yourself! Well at least for a little while until something else comes up.

  1. I already have instore ITL (numbers and letter combinations) for all my inventory - any good primer on what barcode format to use.

  1. Should I setup an alias for each ITL using the UPC symbol that are already on the product. Was thinking of using QSCimport - Alias import

Any help on this would be appreciated.
