I brought this issue to Microsoft's attention about a month ago. They are treating it as a bug and are supposedly working on it. I hope that this issue is resolved before the end of 2007.

Here's what happens as far as I can tell:

  1. create a new item at HQ
  2. issue WS250 to create item at stores
  3. order & receive item at store(s)
  4. sell item at store(s)
  5. re-order with new cost, receive & sell

After all of this, the store databases are all accurate. Costs average and update everywhere that they should.

Transaction data at HQ is accurate. If you check the sales/cost/profit figures at HQ (basically any report that is transaction-based) you will get accurate numbers.

Item data at HQ is no longer accurate. The report Items - Master Value List is simply wrong. The cost field on the items table has never updated. Reorder information at HQ is never updated.

The big issue here is with fiscal year end inventory figures. If you use the HQ report for your inventory value, you are guaranteed to report inaccurate data to the IRS. This is not good. Overvalued inventory = pay to much in taxes. Undervalued inventory = underpayment of taxes. I'm undecided as to which is worse, though I'm pretty sure I know which the IRS would stand on the issue.

How did HQ exist for so many years without anybody noticing this issue? I've been running HQ for nearly two years and I just noticed it 6 weeks ago. Lots of folks have been using HQ for way longer than me and never noticed this problem?

It *really* lowers my confidence in the whole RMS product line. Inventory valuation is such a basic thing. This is the kind of basic flaw that should simply never exist in any inventory control system.
