You can't extend the base description beyond 30 characters or POS will error out. Run your long descriptions into the Ext. Description field, then turn on the option to print Ext. Description on invoices.
30 characters is plenty for the base description. Go to any big box store and check out their 40 col receipts. You don't need much to identify the product. 30 character base + 30 character subdesc1 + 30 character subdesc2 + 30 character subdesc 3 = 90 characters. Ext. Description appears to be unlimited (!!). The Find option in POS lets you search by any of these fields.
