Open department entries in RMS

OK, so I've gone through the online training for RMS and I still don't see how it can be used like an old-fashioned cash register, i.e. enter the amount of the item and press an open department key. Sure, inventory control is a great thing, but not all items in stores have a barcode. There must be an easy way to enter $1.59 into GM department for us old folks who grew up with cash registers instead of computers, right?

Create a non-inventory item 'GM' with the 'must enter price' option selected.

You could easily create a department of General Merch. or simply leave GM uncategorized.

Does this mean I could just enter '159' and hit the 'GM' department key? As we have it now, we have a non-priced item linked to the department with the 'must enter price' option set. This requires the following keystrokes: 'GM' dept key, amount, enter. This is contrary to how cash registers have worked for years and our prospective customers just look at us and shake their heads as if "you've got to be kidding?"

You could try MS POS and make a button on touch screen the same thing and then they would touch it put in price and then move on.

You have two options.

  1. Make a generic item for each department with the 'Must enter price' option set.
  2. Create an ILC for those items that do not have a barcode on them and print out a label.

"This is contrary to how cash registers have worked for years..." You are right and the reason is because this is NOT a cash register. The way RMS works in on a RDMS and an item can only be assigned to one Department/Category. Therefore, what you are asking is impossible. Even if you where to get it to prompt for the Department when you go to run a Sales report all those sales you did for the GM item will show under the last Department assigned.
