RMS Database Size

I understand that the stated database size limit is 2gb. My database is around 275 mb and when I look at database properties in the SO Administrator, it says I am at 92% and have only 25mb available. I am concerned about this. Can anyone shed any light? I only have a single register and the database seems to be growing at about 10mb per week.

Bob your database has a gowth factor and to that end the database will add data to the precommited Database size.

If you back up your database and then restore it and make your auto growth to go up to 15 - 20% then it will work with no issue until you hit 2GB.

This Begs the Question. What do you when you have hit 1.9GB?

What data is removed? Can it be placed in a reports database?

David,

Coming soon, you will be able to use the new SQL 2005 Express with RMS/MSPOS which allows for 4 gig database sizes.

After that, it depends on what _you_ want to do. I recommend keeping _all_ records (or at least 7 years minimum for taxes), so you would need to upgrade to the full version of SQL 2000 or 2005 for unlimited storage.

Also, there are archive programs to remove some info and store it in a different database. Kinda clunky to look at old info, but does work. Costs about half as much as the full blown version of SQL.

Ok, so the 2GB limit is the "local" MSDE version size limit.

It shouldn't have this limitation with SQL2000, right?

David,

That's correct, but remember that the local copy only contains minimal information. It doesn't store any of the transaction information (except when in Offline mode), purchase and receivings, transfers, etc that the main database stores. When you say local, I'm assuming you mean the Offline database.

Again, with the next update using SQL 2005 Express, the local database will increase to 4 gig.

No size limits in SQL2000 or 2005 Workgroup, Standard or Enterprise editions.
