RMS WAN Support

Can you elaborate on your request? SO can already be used over a WAN with properly configured routers and public IP addresses.

Not according to the RMS License Agreement.

It works, sometimes, but it's an 'unsupported configuration' and definitely not reliable enough for everyday use, IMO. If nothing else, it's too slow for a production environment.

How can I see the licensing agreement for SO? I was under the impression that it was allowed.

I have been using SO Manager from a remote location for a long time. Initially I did it via VPN, and now I have a wireless bridge that connects two LANs. Under both setups it worked fine. The DSL-DSL VPN was a little slow at times (had to wait a few seconds for items to come up in the Items dialog) but was defintiely bearable for back office operations. POS speed was only slightly delayed, but then again I never did more than receiving payments and making quotes/work orders.

The other strategy is to have a cheap computer at the store location and access it via a remote desktop access solution. In this case, there can't be any licensing issues (correct me if I am wrong).

HQ is obviously allowed over a WAN. I guess this makes sense because your HQ license is based on the number of stores... But I can't imagine the reason for restricting SO use over a WAN in today's networked world. I guess you could theoretically just have different stores set up as different registers/lanes in a single SO license, but you would not have any inventory tracking. The lack of functionality and reliability/speed issues would be enough to encourage seperate licenses - who needs restrictions in the licensing agreement?!

We have a VPN connection, and RMS errored out with the following message when trying to connect.. ...To connect to this server you must use SQL Server Management Studio or SQL Server Management Objects (SMO).

In SO Admin, we tested the database connection in the config tab, and it worked, but when we tried to connect, we received the error above.

FYI, we connected remotely to the database using ODBC, and also SQL Management Studio Express.

I guess I would like to know how you got the VPN to work, when it seems like the SOM software is prohibit> Brian,

Hi Jeff,

I installed the Backward Compatibility Components (all), then tried it. Then installed the Native Client, and tried it. Still got the same message.

I installed these items on the server, not on the client. I also rebooted the server computer after installing both.

Any ideas?
