The first digit of the credit card number needs to be unmasked, so that a person call see what type of card was used.

set each card type up individually with validation masks under the tender types.
IIf the first character (or any other thtan the last 4 characters were unmasked) they would not be in PCI (Payment Card Industry) compliance and could be subject to significant "fines" by Visa/Mastercard. If you have an issue, call your credit card processor. As suggested by Rook, if l you set up Validation, 4 for Visa, 5 for Mastercard, (I cannot remember Amex and Discover) you would know what the first digit is, otherwise you wold have gotten a processing error at the POS.
