I Am Working With a Fossil

I've got a clients machine with QB 4.0 on Windows for Workgroups 3.11 and need to recover the data to upgrade. I can back it up and copy to a floppy, but QB 2003 on XP doesn't like the file. Small steps for me. Just not wanting to lose data. What is plan B do you folks suppose?

What means "doesn't like"? Does it display an error message? Get a rash?

No. QB 2003 does not put out and error message. It just "defaults" back to the restore page with no error. Is this recoverable?

Try loading the file into a version a lot older than QB 2003. Sounds like your client is a big spender.

Oh, yeah. Big time spender! I'm digging through my pile of CDs now but I'm pretty sure I don't go back that far. I appreciate the reply though.

Export from QB4 and import into QB2006?

QB "Export" applies only to "lists", not transactions. Unless you use a 3rd-party utility, and I doubt there is one available for such an old version.

If you send me a copy of the file after my 2/28 hurricane extensions I will try to import it into an earlier version, no charge.

QuickBooks 2003 should pull in the data just fine from QuickBooks 4.0. If it doesn't I'd suspect that the file is damaged in some way. This is what I would do:

  1. Go back into QuickBooks 4.0 and then verify the data
  2. Rebuild the data in 4.0.
  3. Re verify the file. Is it clean now?
  4. Make a backup in 4.0
  5. Restore the backup into 2003
