New to Premier Accountant

Jul 07, 2005 10 Replies

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Kent Finnell and I'm an endangered species, a native Nashvillian. I've used almost every edition of QuickBooks since version 1 for DOS (lousy, hated it). The product became viable when a solid windows version was produced.

I'm semi-retired but I have a very small number of clients, mostly tax clients. I just updated from QB Pro 2003 as did my primary client. The client now has QB Pro 2005 and I opted for Premier Account with the view of doing a better job for the client.

When I saw the "documentation" that the client received, I was shocked. It was a booklet that only covered the smallest of basics and sketchy details about the new features.

I was dismayed at the documentation I received. Sure it was over 500 pages, but it was a scrambled description of 7 Premier editions and the Enterprise Solution. Now divide 559 by 8. That almost 70 pages per edition, not much more that the booklet that my client received. And I used to think that Intuit was one of the good guys of software!

Now to a problem that I hope can be solved here. When I use Help within the program (F1 or Help | QuickBooks Help | Search) and ask a question (example: How do I import from Excel) and get a list of topics, if I click on a topic, I get the following message in the right-hand window: This page cannot be displayed ... yada yada ... click on the Refresh button ... yada yada.

There's NO freakin' Refresh button! There's not another copy of the browser open.

So what's wrong? Is there an easy repair or workaround? I'm using XP Home SP2, 512 megs of memory and at least 100 gigs of free HD space

And while I'm at it, does anyone have a suggestion for 3rd party documentation for the Premier Accountant edition?

I'll be back, but I'll mostly lurk. I've already learned, here, to remove the program CD when QB goes for the updates and patches.

Well Kent, perhaps you have been sleeping for the last couple of years but many software vendors do not include comprehensive manuals with their products today. Appears that most users never read them.

Now for the problem at hand. Since you probably know Willie Nelson and I love the Willie man I will help you out. Check out Microsoft's KB 896054 and try method two.

Get back to us with the results.

The QB Pro 2003 version had a fairly comprehensive book with it, 350 pages not including the index. It lacked some details but at least it was there. Some vendors at least include a manual on the CD, which I understand is true of QB Pro 2005. Microsoft started the trend with Windows 95 and the companion Office, IIRC.

No, I don't know Willie, but I remember him from his early days on local TV. He actually looks better with the scruffy beard and clothes than he did clean-shaven and in the neat, taylored western suit. Same great voice that's aged well though.

Thanks for the tip.

Well, that might work, but I just don't hack the registry. Thanks anyway.

Since you are a novice user find someone that can. We are not talking brain surgery here. It's not a hack, the solution is coming straight from Microsoft. Applying method two should take less than one minute to implement. If it does not work just remove the new key and look for another solution.

I am assuming that you recently installed the latest security releases from Microsoft. Certain help systems ( QB 2005 is probably has this kind) are now considered security risks by the operating system and will not open.

I sell and support another accounting software program and have seen at several client sites including the machines in my office over the last two weeks exhibit the loss of the help problem. Using the solution given by Microsoft KB 896054 always worked in these situations.

In any event you are the second poster this week that has reported this problem with version 2005 on this Newsgroup. I was hoping you would confirm yes or no if the solutions works.

In any event if the problem is caused by the reason above then more will post here and I'm sure one of them will be able to confirm if the solution is a valid one.

I remembered that I have Power Desk 6, which has an easy to use Registry Editor. Did it, seems to work, but I'm still getting a script error that doesn't seem to signify anything. I set the value to 2.

What happens if you set it to 3 or 4. Does the script error go away? What does seems to work mean? In any event my theory was correct it is a security issue caused by the installation of Microsofts' latest patch.

It looks like we will not be seeing any more secruity related problems given the punishment of 30 hours community service handed out the the creater of the Sasser Worm. Future virus authors will certainly think twice before risking the horors of such a sentence.

The line wasn't there at all so I had to type it in. Values can be set from

0 to 4. Apparently if the line isn't there the zero value is assumed. 0 is blocks any thing beyond the local. 1, allows local and local intranet. 2 adds trusted zone. 3 adds internet, and 4 adds damn near anything that comes along. Off hand I'd say that Intuit wasn't aware that the value needed to be set.

That's a slap on the wrist. He'll be back to salve his ego. 30 hours in a home for the elderly might be repugnant to him but not impossible to deal with and the 21 months suspended sentence might as well not be there. Then there's the security firm offering him a job. No real punishment.

As long as someone tells these little monkeys that they cannot do that, they'll do it just to prove that they can.

Again, thanks for the tip and it's nice to encounter someone who's even more optimistic than I.

Kent I was refering to your workstation in particular. I know what the 5 settings do, it's on the KB notice I had you link to. You mentioned some sort of scripting error, I was wondering if you increased value if it had any effect?

The line didn't have to be added until the latest MS security patch got installed. Given that the patch was created after QB, Intuit would not know about it. I am assuming that future updates from Intuit will address this issue.

*Blush* Well, I could say that I posted the above for the benefit of anyone who did use the link, but I'd be lying.

When I make the change, I started QB without rebooting and F1 worked properly but didn't display the graphic button to the right of the question [ask]. The script error message did appear. Later, after I rebooted and did the same thing, the graphic button appeared but the script error message.didn't.

I had gotten the same script error message before when using QB Pro 2003. I'd click yes or no to continue (it didn't seem to matter on the operation) and the help function worked as it should. Only after I installed Accountant Premier did the F1 display the problems that are now solved.

Immediately after I installed QBAP 2005, I installed the latest updates and patches from Intuit. One would think that the problem would have been detected before early July 2005.

I'll have to ask my client with 2005 Pro if the problem exists there.

How would that be possible? Microsoft just released the patches.
