Is it possible to set up Quickbooks for a person who is not incorporated, but works as a private contractor, or do you need Quicken for that situation?
Absolutely. Many sole proprietors use QuickBooks.
A company name is required when creating a new database. Would you enter the person's name for company? Could that be a problem if the file is imported into a tax program?
It makes no difference; it's just text.
Just make up something and go on is fine as far as QB is concerned; you might want to consider how you're actually doing business, however, and are you compliant w/ local ordinances, etc., etc., etc., ... if you haven't thought about stuff like that to the point that even the concept of having a name for your business seems to throw you in a tizzy...

I would also recommend you have a local QB pro set you up and answer your questions about bookkeeping and accounting. A couple hours and money well spent.
