Two company files open at the same time

Diferent versions of QB, yes. Two computers, yes. Terminal services for one and local for the other, yes.

But what you want - no.

Why? If you let us know maybe we can suggest alternatives.

Because I want to re-type three years worth of transactions into a new file and it's a pain having one file on the laptop and one on the desktop. I'd rather just alt-tab between them or have two monitors.

If I could export all the transactions and then import them I would do that but that's not possible either. I looked at OfficeQ (datablox.com) but it seems it will do just about everything except what I need.

Because I want a balance sheet that only reflects transactions from Oct 2003 to present and not from 1994 to present.

I should have started a new company file back then as someone told me on alt.accounting, but no one told me WHY and my accountant said it was not necessary. He was correct in that it is not NECESSARY but it would have been the CORRECT way to do it.

I was a Sole Proprietor but then Incorporated and all the Owner Investment and Retained Earnings & Owner withdrawals (Equity) are incorrect for the Corp Balance Sheet

I don't need to re-enter every invoice etc, because I can consolidate them into one per month. I'm may try it on just one month and see how long it takes. I should get faster as it goes if I decide to continue.

I've only done one weeks so far but I see problems with opening balances for payroll that I have to figure out.

Is there another way to get correct balances? I don't see a way to adjust these Equity accounts as of the date mentioned.

I may just skip the whole project but I sure would like to have these Equity accounts correct

Why not just enter the appropriate Journel entries to fix the problem in your existing company file?

I'm about to try that with a copy of the file but I'm not 100% sure of the correct way to do it. (which accounts to use, contra accounts etc)?

You really need to talk to your accountant about what GL transactions you need to fix everything. However, you shouldn't have to start over with a new company file and loose all of your historical data (not to mention the hassle of reentering all of your recent transactions).
