Changing the Amount for a "Repeating Online"

I have a "Repeating Online" due for May 4, Aug 4. etc. The May 4 amount is correct and the check number and amount already appear in my check register. I need to change the Aug 4 amount and all future amounts. When I go to 'Help', it tells me go to Tools, Manage Bill and reminders, Repeating Online, Edit and change the amount. That does not work.

It looks like the only way to do this is to delete this instance of the Repeating Online payment and then set it up again with the new amount. The only problem I have is that I do not want to cancel the May 4 payment. Presumably, I would do this after May 4?

Anyone?

Interesting situation. I don't have specific experience w/ it, but suspect that canceling the repeating online payment will also cancel your May scheduled payment, just as you've described.

If the amount is going to change with each payment, I don't think I'd use a repeating online Payment. Instead, I'd just set up a reminder w/in Quicken where the Payment Method is "Online Bill Pay".

The difference is that a repeating online payment is basically fire & forget. You've told you bank the amount & either a set number of payments or "continue until I tell you to stop" at some time frequency.

A bill & income reminder has more flexibility, but will require you to sync with the bank before the payment gets scheduled. You're basically only giving the bank instructions about the next payment to go out. You use Quicken to remind you to sync (you can have Q remind you months in advance), then shape the payment the way you want & send the instructions to the bank.

I don't use Quicken bill pay, nor repeating online, so I can't help there, really, like bartt.shelton.

I exclusively use my bank/credit card FI's digital payments systems. That means they take the money from my accounts. For those I have set up many, many scheduled transactions that are automagically entered into the registers, most 30-90 days ahead of time. Once they are there, I check them against bills, statements, whatever and edit them as appropriate. This works just fine for me, and gives me an idea of what is going to happen to my balances in the (near) future. Those scheduled Txs are very easy to edit as well in Tools|Manage bills & reminders (or Ctrl-J), then the scheduled tab.

Hi, Arnie.

Only slightly off-topic for your post:

About a year ago, I set up automatic payments for my second landline phone, the number I got 20 years ago, before ADSL made it convenient for the computer to share a voice line. But then we decided to cancel that second line and rely on just our "home" landline plus a TracFone for emergencies. So I had CenturyTel cancel that second number - the one that was charged automatically to my USAA Visa card each month. For the transition period, I've had "personal ringing" on our home phone for when there is an incoming call on the cancelled number; Century charges me $2.50 a month for this. By now, my friends know not to call that line so we get nothing but "spam" calls on that number.

I've been getting a notice each month from USAA that they have received a bill for $0.00 from Century, which they will pay automatically! USAA says they can't cancel this monthly charge since it is coming from Century. And I can't log on to Century to cancel it because the account for that number has been cancelled and doesn't exist anymore! Catch 22! :>(

Last week I went to the local office of Century and spoke to the nice lady. MAYBE it's taken care of now, but it's too soon to know for sure. If not, I guess that USAA will just have to keep paying $0.00 a month for me for a looong time. :^{

I'll have to take a look at that and see if I can use my bank's bill pay instead of Quicken and what it would take to make the change. I will also have to check the bank's bill pay fee. I get Quicken bill pay free because I was grandfathered from Wachovia.

I have many of my monthly bills automatically debited to my bank account by the biller so I don't have to do anything about them. It is the non-monthly stuff like doctor bills that I use Tools, Online Payee List, Use and then fill in the amount. I presume the bank's Billpay will let me do that.

I hate the doctor bills because they require me to return a portion of the bill. So I make them by charging the fees to a credit card. For some bills, though, I use my free Chase billpay services ...

I ignore the statement that says "return this portion of the bill". I set up the bill pay with the amount due and the name and account number are added to the bill pay (or check). They have never not cashed it or failed to credit my account.

Took the plunge today and deleted the quicken "Repeating Online". Did an update for the account and it came back and "voided" the original transaction for May 4. No problem at all. Then I set up the repeating payment using the banks automatic bill pay. That looks to be a lot easier then using Quicken.
