Expenses displayed in Red in inflows section of reports

When I create a transaction report, expenses in several categories (and sub categories) are displayed as negative numbers (i.e., red) in the Inflows section of the report. I would have expected these items to be shown in black in the Outflows section of the report. It's been doing this for years.

Any idea why?

One thing that has been known to cause that is having an "income" type tax line item assigned to an expense category.
