how to enter Mastercard line items

the register by accepting. ...

Of course, one down side to this (and I know that the OP was probably not suggesting this as the better approach) is that if you don't match what you think you spent, you might 'accidently' accept transactions that weren't yours, or are changed from your bill (I've had that happen when I think I've paid $xxx to a restaurant after adding the tip, and the amount they actually post to my account is different.)

Of course I suggest version 'A', which is you MANUALLY add your charges, and then download/accept after verification that you agree with all of the items appearing on the OSU.

What you do, if you want to do it cleanly, is "reconcile" the credit card account to your paper statement. Quicken will prompt you for summary charges and credits that will also be in the bill. At the end, if you owe something (likely), it'll then prompt you to write a check for the correct amount to the credit card company.

When the check clears it'll show up as a transfer: A debit in your checking account (that's right, you just paid out the cash!) and a credit in your charge card account, making the big negative balance smaller (also correct).

With Discover, sometimes the closing date on the statement doesn't quite match up with the posting dates of some of the charges, so, during reconcile, one might have to uncheck a couple of the latter transactions, then make sure to check them, again, the next month when they do show. But that's a minor quibble.

With OSU and reconciliation online, the paper statement is 'old' by the time it gets to you. I am not 100% sure I am following this part of the thread, but I *never* reconcile to the paper statement anymore. Not sure why that would be 'cleanly, is "reconcile" the credit card account to your paper statement..."; a big point of this is NOT to have to use a paper statement Ken, or am I missing something here?

I may have lost track of the thread, but here is my 2¢ When downloading or checking the FI's website I mark transactions as cleared ("c"). Then when the "paper" or electronic stement comes, I reconcile to that and mark the transactions "R". On more than 1 occasion I have found errors - 95% mine - that otherwise would have gone uncollected.

FWIW YMMV

I think the solution has gotten way too convoluted...

If your credit card company allows you to do OSUs, all you have to do is record your transaction into Quicken and do follow-up OSUs.

As far back as I can remember, which is getting shorter with every passing year, this method has worked without a hitch.

Like Andrew, am *I* missing something?
