How to Handle Mutual Fund Reorganization

I own shares in the AIM Total Return Fund. On 7/18/05, the fund was reorganized into AIM Basic Balanced Fund (a fund in which I had not held any shares previously). Although there were no transaction fees and no tax consequences, the share price changed significantly, which affected the number of shares I own. (The total dollar amount value remained unchanged.)

What entries do I need to make in Quicken2005 to reflect the new pricing and number of shares without having it affect my cost/tax basis in this fund? Can I rename the fund's account name in Quicken? If it matters, this is NOT an IRA account.

Thanks!

Corporate Acquisition.

Could you be a bit more specific, please? I don't see "Corporate Acquisition" as a type of transaction that I can enter....

If you don't see Corp. Acquisition on the menu, it is because you have your fund in a Single Mutual Fund account. Convert the account to a normal account and then the CA will appear. You'll be unable to hold another security in the SMF account in any event.

You're right that I have this fund in a Single Mutual Fund Account. (...as I do with all of my funds). How do I go about converting it to a "normal account"? A quick look through the Quicken help file didn't reveal anything.

I could create a new account and delete the existing account, but I don't want to have to re-input years of transactions.

Thanks again, Bert

Investing | Investing Can I change a single mutual fund account so that I can add more securities to it?

Yes. You need to change it into a brokerage (regular) investment account.

1 Choose Tools menu > Account List. 2 Double-click the investment account you'd like to change. 3 In the Account Attributes snapshot, click in the field next to Single Mutual Fundto change the attribute from Yes to No.

Caution! You can change a single mutual fund account into a brokerage investment account, but once you change it, you cannot change it back if you have added any new securities to it.
