I did not import the most current data file..now what do I do?

(Using Quicken 06, New User Version)

I recently moved to a new computer. I installed Quicken 2006 on my new PC, and imported my data file.

But once I looked at the data in the register, I can see that I must have imported the wrong file, as my checking account shows that it was last reconciled in July 2006! But I know that I have imported and reconciled up thru about Nov 2006. I guess I imported an older data file.

When I find the correct data file what do I do? Should I import the entire file again? Or what?

Thanks!

I am assuming you used to run an older version fo Quicken on computer "old", and now have Q06 on computer "new". Be warned that the new user version has limited capabilities or life span. It's goning to cost to get "basic", "deluxe", "premier", or Home and business.

Just make a copy of all the data files that belong together from the most recent version of the qdf file and its brothers on computer "old". That means the main qdf extensioned file (with whatever name you gave it, often mydata.qdf) as well as the 3-5 other files with the same name and different extensions. Then copy those files to a different location on computer "new", different from the location you have already chosen for the file set you have now on "new". Maybe you want to give the files a different name (but keep the extensions as they are).

Finally double click on the qdf file you really want to start Quicken 06 and have it convert the data from your older version.

Hope this is clear.

If I understand correctly, I think he wants to get all the data from the correct file, but also keep all the recent updates he's done to the wrong file. Your instructions, Han, would only get him the data from the correct file but would not include recent updates to that data. And I don't seen anything in the OP that says he's using a trial version that came with the new computer. He may be, but the post is not clear on that.

He is missing data between July and November 06. If he transfers/converts the July file I would think he can update that by downloading transactions. Otherwise he is indeed between a rock and a hard place. Maybe John Pollard's qif files can help him, but I couldn't, which is my problem.

I thought I had read that he had a "new user version" (which is what comes preloaded on new machines as a bait and switch tactic of Intuit's, but I must have mixed up posts. Sorry.

Sorry, Han, my screw-up. At the very top of his post, in parentheses, he says: "(Using Quicken 06, New User Version)" So, more than likely you are correct.

You are exactly correct. In fact, I intended to continue using Q04 Deluxe. I copied Q04 Deluxe onto "new" computer. But when I ran Quicken, Q06 Trial Version took over. No problem. I will likely upgrade.

I will give that a try. Again, thanks to everyone!

Well, I tried the above advice. I located a more recent copy of my data. I restarted Quicken, opened the file, selected it, and the program automatically converted the data....but when I looked at my registers, the data is exactly the same!

When I click on "File" in the drop down menu, I can see the file name and location. So I can verify that I am accessing a different file. But if the file is different, why is the data in my register exactly the same, including the balance in the accounts? Why does the program appear to be not accessing the different file/data? : (

I can only surmise you have overwriteen the data before.

Try making a scheme where you include the date in the folder name. Newer Q (2006 and up, I believe) can append the date automagically.

I forget the OP. Are you using Vista? The reason I ask is because I came across a problem similar to yours though different when using RC1 version of Vista (if you don't know that is, it's kind of like a beta version but closer to the final version released to market). I wrote about it in this forum if you care to search for it. Basically, the problem is that it wasn't showing recent updates I'd made to the file in a non-Vista version of Windows. That's not the same as the problem you're having, but I thought I'd bring it up just to throw out all possibilities. I think Han may be closer to the mark, though. You probably overwrote without knowing it.
