New user: QIF Import problem

Hello, I recently installed Quicken 2006 and experienced the following issue.

  1. I attempted to download my checking account information from my bank using the online connection and stement download functions within Quicken. However, I noticed I was missing many transactions in my register. I began to enter them manually but then I thought, I wonder if I can download a history of my account statements in QIF format that my bank provides online, and then inport them, and as a result end up with all the registry entries. When I tried this, using the FILE>Import utility I end up at a screen that says "Don't see your account?" and then explains that your cannot import checking, savings, etc... accounts. Am I doing something wrong here? I use Quickbooks for my business and have some similar issue of missing registry entries that are found when I reconcile the account at month end.

  1. Most of the missing entries are deposits, which makes my accounts seem in the red.

Thanks for your help.

You must have missed the zillions of tirades against Intuit, railing against the sunset policies regarding qif export/import.

There have been some workarounds mentioned, but I can't recall them at the moment. Google is your friend, if you don't mind their datacollection methods.

"Actually, I think it's fairly simple to import a QIF file. Simply start a new CASH account and import the QIF file there. Then highlight all entries and copy them and paste into the checking account or wherever you want them. Seems to work pretty reaily, unless I'm mistaken (always possible)."

It is a decent workaround in many cases, but there are two problems with it. One: it will not work for investment accounts. Two: the ability to "match" to existing transactions is lost; all transactions imported using this method will be "New".

There is a method that overcomes both problems; posted by me in the Quicken Forums, under "Other Topics". (Also probably posted in this Newsgroup by me ... and in both places by others).
