Q2012D Glitches

Didn't notice either of these prior to the recent update (although I could be wrong):

  1. The Investing.Quicken.com checkoff on the One Step Update Settings screen won't stick after I select it.

  1. The sort order on the Due column on the Bill and Income Reminders screen won't stick when changed from "latest at top" (a rather weird default) to "earliest at top".

Both are really annoying, since I wind up having to change each almost every day.

Are others seeing this too? Any suggestions or workarounds? Thanks!

Yes, I noticed in R3 that the date sort order defaults to descending rather than the more expected ascending. I'm disappointed this hasn't been corrected in R4, as I thought it was a pretty obvious bug. But I guess I'll have to file a bug report after all.

I hadn't noticed your issue #1, but then I don't use that feature in OSU.

I've also noticed in R4 that (for me, at least) Quicken has started bombing periodically for no obvious reason. It just issues an error message that says it needs to close, creates and sends an error report to Intuit and assigns me an incident number I don't bother to record.

Margaret

Hi, Cal.

I haven't noticed #1, but I've been meaning to complain about #2. Thanks for mentioning it. I also think it's a silly little bug that should be fixed routinely in the next Release. I hope!

Ooops! Subject should be Re: Q2013 Glitches - but I made a glitch when I let the Spell Checker "correct" the Subject line - which it should never offer to do, anyway. :^{

I have been following this, but haven't seen the glitches, because I don't look at those items (I also thought that Quicken.com, or at least some of the services had been suspended).

But to show I'm awake, I have to commend you RC on being an early adopter of Q2013. My Quicken is a mere 2012 ...

Hi, Han.

I've got myself in a hole, Han! I'd better stop digging. :^{

It's Q2012D, of course, as Cal said in his OP. If WLM's Spell Checker hadn't suggested changing that to 2011 I wouldn't be in this hole. Yes, I DO have the box checked to "...always ignore...original text in a reply...", as I always have, back to OE - but WLM always checks the OP and Subject anyhow. It's a bug in WLM, but not likely that Microsoft will ever correct it. So I just keep clicking "Ignore All" when the checker flags one in the text. But when it finishes checking the OP text, it move to the Subject and the format of the Spell Checker box changes - just a little. What WAS "Ignore All" suddenly is "Accept" (the change) - and there you have it. When it suggested "Q2011" to replace "Q2012D", I was already conditioned to just click. Gotcha! And, since there was nothing more to check, WLM Sent the "corrected" message immediately.

Now this fixit thread is longer than the original. :>( But thanks for catching it.

long story snipped.

RC, I'm not a fan of any microsoft email or news program.

Xnews works simply, or complicated - as you wish - as a newsreader. newsgroup: alt.comp.software.newsreaders

Eudora 7.1.0.9 is still fine as an email program (unless you are often using different alphabets), and it's now free. newsgroup: comp.mail.eudora.ms-windows

As you expected, I keep email and news totally separate.

What about Thunderbird, Han? ;-) I too gave up on Microsoft email/newsreader software a rather long time ago....

Don't know about Han but I find Thunderbird actually worse than MS offerings as a newsreader and just barely OK as an email client. Versions after 2.xx seem to get progressively worse.

I agree with Xnews for newsgroups and use Pegasus for email.

I tried Thunderbird once. Didn't really like it. Then Eudora open source/Odysseus/whatever came out (I believe it's built on Thunderbird with a Eudora-like gui), and I paid for it. It was not even a quarter of what an alpha version should be. Then I lost my registration info, and the authors never answered my email question.

I grew up with Eudora. Started at version 2 or so, and it does what I want it to do. Nowadays even IMAP works.

One of the biggest advantages from old times is that emails aren't stored in 1 big file that can get corrupted, but the text etc portions gets saved in mailboxes, embedded files like pictures in an embedded directory, and attachments in an attachment directory. Nowadays file systems are better so the safety of separate files isn't as important anymore, but I still like it the way it is.

Over the years I've used Eudora, Outlook Express and Thunderbird. Each has evolved during those years, so my opinion is based on my usage during those times, i.e., I've not used and compared each client consistently over the years. Anyway, when Thunderbird was in its infancy, I hated it. Tried it several times and went back to Eudora or Outlook Express. Once Eudora began including ads, I dropped it immediately. Outlook Express I liked fairly well, but I hate how it stores data in proprietary files. Sure there are methods (documented by users) for importing that data into other email apps, but many other apps store their data in text files, such as Thunderbird. I forget when I finally made the switch to Thunderbird, but it's been quite a while now.

Since I've added an Android smartphone to my tech arsenal, I've switched to using Gmail via the web, something I *never* thought I'd do. I pretty much only use TB as a newsreader now, and I only follow a handful of groups, all of which are text. I do prefer usenet, but so many forums have switch to a web-based bulletin board-type forum, so I'm moving more to the cloud. They'll have to drag me kicking and screaming before I'll store my financial data on the web though! ;-)

Margaret
