quicken 2005 full of bugs - service is awful

I've been using Quicken regularly since the early 90's and the program and customer service have markedly deteriorated over the last 5 years. Intuit is really an oxymoron now, since the product "enhancements" have only made things needlessly complex and counterintuitive. For example, something as easy as entering an investment transaction to sell shares of a money market fund, placed a "N/A" in the cash amount field and the cash balance has not been updated. When I call tech support, I reach someone in India who tells me to uninstall and reinstall the program as the first step, then he refuses to help me further unless I pay another 24$ charge, even though this is a continuation of a previous call; he claims there is no record of the previous call, despite giving him the case number the last tech gave me. When I ask to speak to the supervisor he puts me in hold for10 min, then tells me the supervisor is in a meeting and to call back in an hour. At this point I'm angry and he threatens to document the call, implying that will somehow affect any future service. I've had enough of this product and would gladly try another, but the only one that even comes close is Microsoft Money and it lacks many basic features. Any other progrms out there?

I have been using Quicken since 92 (Quicken DOS version). The product used to be easy, simply and user friendly as the way they want to develop the product at the beginning, but not anymore in its continue "enhancements" that make the product far beyond average users' need. 10 years ago I have

800 number to call Quicken for free tech support (likely I can talk to developer), but not anymore now.

This newsgroup is for USERS. You need to contact Intuit with suggested improvements and support problems.

I've been using Quicken since 1/1/95. I don't think you are likely to be able to talk to the software developers of any major product. As for features, users can utilize whatever features they need to track their finances. For example, if you don't want to track your home inventory, you don't use that feature. If you don't have investments, you can disregard investments features. I don't find Quicken (now at H&B '06) to be 'full of bugs' and as for tech support, the program works well and I have not needed to call for support. In all reality, the best support is available free, right here.

Now why would he want to contact tech support if he WEREN'T a user?

And just for the record, the OP is right. Quicken is bloated, confusing and not even close to intuitive. If it were so easy to use then this group would be a lot smaller and have a lot less problem posts. I'd switch too but I'm stuck...at least for now.

I actually received a written (snail mail) response from Scott Cook to a tech support question about one of the early DOS versions!

I am new to stock trading, having started with Q2006. I use Ameritrade. When I purchase a stock, the transaction is available for download on the next business day, and contains a placeholder for the cost amount. On the following day, the next download fills in the placeholder with the actual data. I have no idea why it works this way, but the same pattern has occurred with several recent buys. I have not sold anything yet.

It is unlikely that the transactions you are trying to enter are placeholders. There is only one "placeholder" transaction type: "Adjust Share Balance" (it has an "Action" value of "Entry"). It does not have any "cost" value; but it does affect the "Cash Amt" of other transactions; namely every transaction for the security named in the placeholder and dated on or before the placeholder.

I have yet to find a good use for placeholders, but there are those who like them. As far as I know, there is only one situation where a placeholder is required and that is if you tell Quicken to track your mm fund as cash. Otherwise, I believe you can delete all placeholder transactions and enter the history manually. (NOTE: if you have permitted a placeholder in your account and you have entered transactions for the security named in the placeholder with dates on or before the placeholder, and you want to get rid of the placeholder effect ... you must delete the placeholder and all the historical transactions related to it, then enter the historical transactions again).

Yup, directly into Q6. I use One-Step Update to import data from about a dozen credit cards, including three American Express cards, banks, including Citibank and Chase, and Amerirade. I discontinued all webconnect accounts several months ago. It was taking me far too much time. I still have Ingdirect and Emigrantdirect because they pay high interest rates, but I need to make just once entry per month to record the interest income

I am not pleased at all with Intuit and Quicken 2005. I too, got routed to a guy in India who told me to reinstall the software, etc, etc.. and of course his suggestions didn't resolve my problem. Then he wanted some $$ for the call.

I was really happy with Quicken 2001 and wouldn't have 'upgraded' had I not been required to in order to download stock quotes. With 2005 I can only get a successful stock quote download (without Quicken crashing) about once every 3 months. It is so aggravating especially since I use 2005 in such a basic fashion. Intuit is now sending me e-mails to upgrade to 2006 for only $79, and I'm thinking, hey get my 2005 version working like 2001 and maybe I would.

Anyway, I've e-mailed Intuit several times and have never even gotten one response from them.

Yours is a very unusual situation. I have been running Quicken 2006 (and before that, 2005) and updating my portfolio at least once per day without any problems whatsoever. I have an Ameritrade account, with about fifteen stocks, and other accounts with several other accounts. I only download trades through Ameritrade, but update stock prices on all my stocks all the time, through One Step Update. I would imagine that many thousands of users are running their portfolios with Quicken. Even in this newsgroup, I have seen very few complaints regarding stock updates. Is it possible that there is something about your particular computer, or your internet setup, that might be causing a problem? Do you perhaps have another computer available (maybe a local friend could help out) on which you could install Quicken and run your file for a while to see if you can replicate the problem? Maybe Quicken is not the culprit. In any event, good luck solving your problem. I would imagine it must be extremely frustrating.

I am truly glad you Q. works as advertised. However, the OP is not the only one having problems with stock quotes. Mine hasn't worked for some time. My frustration is with Intuit's lack of support. How hard would it be to make the web site clear to understand and clear to find what information you need? I have tried several times to find out how to reactivate stock quote downloads...as opposed to historical prices downloads...without success.

Guard your setup well. If it ever goes wrong you may find yourself in the boat with US!
