QUICKEN portfolio view

I have not bothered to update my version of Quicken for the last 5 years. Before that, I had purchased 5 of 6 versions. I just dont have the patience to re-jig my thinking of how I handle my finances.

Over the last 5 year some of the holdings I have sold continue to appear on my portfolio list. By now I have 1/2 a dozen such items. It is just annoying.

I have actually tried to re-enter all the transactions relating to the delinquent holding, but it persists. Has anyone else had this problem and found a solution.

So what year, version, and release are you using?

I can't picture just what you mean. Can you be more specific?

What is your "portfolio list"? Is it the Portfolio tab of the "Investing Center"? In what manner do the "sold" items appear?

Usually this occurs for one or both of two reasons:

(1) the stock is on your Watch List, and/or

(2) a tiny fraction of a share remains (caused by a rounding error, often in the 6th decimal place).

If this isn't enough info to resolve your problem, post back with the info John requested.

Click the "Options" menu item on the Portfolio tab; make sure the option to "Show closed lots" is not selected.

Yup... I get this too.... there's a couple of stocks that just *will not* go away, no matter what I re-enter or change.

Using Q2009H&B here.

I have Quicken 2009. I have exactly that same thing in my portfolio view, showing stocks that I no longer own. If I enable "Show Closed Lots", then additional older stocks and funds show up. If I remove the check mark under "watch" in the security list, they disappear from the portfolio view. In fact, I watched one stock disappear and reappear in the portfolio when I clicked on the check mark in the security list.

If that doesn't work, you can customize the view and remove individual stocks or accounts. That might cause a problem if you buy the same stocks again.

Hi, Eric - and Lea.

In the "wizard" for the sale of the last shares of a security, did you enter the number of shares you sold? Or did you check the box to "Sell all shares in this account"?

If Quicken thinks you have 100.00000001 shares before the sale, and you tell it you sold 100 shares, then it thinks you still have .00000001 share left. Try checking the "all shares" box and let Quicken record that you sold the whole lot of 100.00000001 shares. Then Quicken can be happy and the difference in recording and reporting your transaction won't be enough to notice.

It's worth a try. :^}

If you've also made sure the old securities are not on your Watch List, and if you've tried changing the newest "Sell" transaction for one of your problem securities so it sells "all shares in this account"; the only other suggestion I can make is to try to "recalculate" the account register(s) where the problem securities were held. You do that by holding CTRL while pressing the letter "Z", in the Transactions tab of the investment account (Quicken should then present a dialog box, asking if you want to do the "recalculate").

[Naturally, you can Customize the Portfolio view and deselect those securities. You can also "hide" the securities in the Securities List (and insure you do not have the Security List option to "View hidden securities" checked) - then you may still have to uncheck the securities in the Portfolio tab Customize dialog (or uncheck "show hidden securities).]

That will not solve the problem. I've done that numerous times. In fact, a couple of the securities this happens with, I have never bought or sold anything other than integral numbers of shares.

How about trying a REMOVE SHARES transaction and using the SPECIFY LOTS option? Q will bring up a popup window with the shares that it thinks you still own? Does that work?

So: do you claim to speak for every other person's situation ... or just your own?

So do you have evidence that the suggestion offered by R.C. has never prevented, or solved, this problem for anyone ... or is your snide remark your, not very adult, way of admitting that you don't have such evidence?
