Recovering cost basis of a security

Jun 09, 2011 0 Replies

I thought I had lived through Vanguard's renaming of securities. Unfortunately, I discovered that one had doubled transactions because of my technique for handling the split. That in turn led me to believe I had more money in that fund than I actually do. Upon trying to withdraw some of those share, Quicken considered part of it a short sale. Thing got all bolloxed up.

Vanguard only maintains price records for 10 years but some of mine are close to twice that. So how can I get the cost basis? How can the IRS claim I'm not providing accurate information when it comes to tax time?
