Recovering Turbo Tax programs

Due to a crash, I'm in the process of recovery. On a separate (uncrashed) drive, I have copies of my Turbo Tax Data Files for 2003, 2004, & 2005. I also have a copy of my original C: drive (with the exception of the Windows folder) which includes the Program Files folder and Turbo Tax program folders for 2004 & 2005. My question: Can I simply copy the Turbo Tax program folders back into my new C:\Program Files folder? Or must I go through the installment drill with my disk and then have to download updates from Intuit etc? (In other words, does the Intall process add anything to the Win Registry, or elsewhere, that TT for '04 or '05 needs to run properly?)

Second question: I lost both my Program files and my Data files for

2006. So when I start my taxes for 2007, will TT pick up the data from the 2005 data folder (like it would have picked up '06, if it were available)? Or do I have to just start from scratch for 2007?

TIA Port

Loading thread data ...

Yup. I tried using the copy method and that went NOwhere. I had to start over with my CD, download everying including State tax files, basically start over from scratch. I guess backing up Turbo Tax Program files is a waste of time/space since they can't be reloaded and used again? In other words, if you lose or uninstall 'em after Intuit no longer supports them (after what, 3-4 years?) there's no getting them back. -shrug-

I was afraid of that :-(

Thanks :-) Port

It just occured to me that I can reload my 2006 TT program and import the 2005 Data into it, then import *that* into my 2007 TT program when I'm ready. Might save a little time & effort over manually filling out all those little Personal Info boxes. Thanks, Port

You have to install the programs. A *LOT* of things happen when you run the install program. You may have to download the updates manually from the Intuit web site.

My guess is that it will not find what it needs and you will have to enter it manually again...

What I do when I'm done is:

1) Copy the tax file to a safe location 2) Print the tax returns (mailed & complete) to PDF files and move them 3) Uninstall TTAX 4) Go to the Intuit web site and download the manual update file. Pu tha in the same safe place as the tax & pdf files.

If I have to work on it again, I install the old program from CD, install the update, copy the original tax file and let 'er rip....
