Stocks

I am using Quicken 2005 Canadian version.

In real-life, I have my account for stocks. I can buy Canadian and American stocks in their respective currencies. The reports that I do get are all in Canadian dollars.

So, the problem I am facing is this: in Quicken, I have my stock account set for Canadian dollars. None of the American stocks are shown in the drop-down list. (This is a huge pain for me). How would I go comparing my stocks statement (real-life) and the one from Quicken? My real-life statements are all in CAD dollars.

Also, since I have American stocks, when dividends come out, my statement shows something like this (this is an example only). dividend - Microsoft Stock: 20$ USD Tax (for holding non-Canadian stock): -3$ USD

How do I get the -3$ USD listed in Quicken?

Thanks

Quicken supports currencies at the account level, not at the holding level.

The simplest solution is to split your holdings into two accounts in Quicken: one CA$, one US$. Whether you do this at your broker is up to you. If you have only one brokerage account, are you sure you are buying US stocks in their native currency? Or is your broker converting (at their current exchange rate) with each buy and sell.

I handle foreign withholding tax as a Miscellaneous Expense, using the category 'For Tax'. This is linked to a tax line item so I remember to claim it on my tax return.
