Turbo Tax 2011

Is it safe to buy Turbo Tax 2011? That is, has Washington stopped screwing with the tax laws?

Thx.

There is likely to be online updates. But it should be all transparent. One click and download.

Hi, Cy.

The TTax 2011 box you buy at Office Depot - or wherever - today was shrink-wrapped by Intuit months ago. If you wait until March, you will get that same disk with the same contents. Either way, you'll need to let the program go online as soon as it finishes installing to get "the latest" updates available at that time. And then you must let it get later updates - quickly, easily and at no charge - every time you restart the program.

No, Washington has not "stopped screwing with the tax laws" - and probably never will. :^{

But I see NO advantage in waiting "until it's safe" to buy TurboTax 2011 - or any annual edition.

Hi, Cy.

No. Several reasons might make it prudent to file early - such as a large expected refund. Or just to get it over with and off your To-Do List.

LOL! Your last sentence above describes me to a T. The thing I do every year that I hate the most is income tax. Even though I never get a refund these days, I always do it as soon as all the information (1099s, etc.) I need comes in, so it's no longer hanging over my head. It's a big relief when it's over and done with.

I'd like to file early but I file an extension every year because some obnoxious a$$holes like to send their K1 several weeks past April

I own several limited partnerships and all of them post k-1's online well before the April 15th deadline. And in each case, the k-1's are directly downloadable into TT. In fact, I won't invest in a limited partnership unless the tax information is available online.

R C - certainly your knowledge far exceeds mine when it comes to this topic, but I would also add that in my experience if one CAN wait, one DOES lessen the potential to have to file an amended return because a form DID change late in the game, or you missed a 1099, or missed a deduction, or whatever.

It's nice that you have a choice, I don't.

First off, as others haves said, regardless when you buy the software, there will be updates downloaded and installed automatically. So, the only factor should be "How much is it?"

I don't understand the point of waiting until the last minute to file based on posible changes in IRs rulings. The laws won't change after Jan

1st. It's the IRS interpretation of (and rules based on) the current tax laws.

What is the probability that, for 99.9% of us that the amount paid/owed will change in the last 3 months? IMNSHO, slim to none.

My rules are:

- As soon as I have all that I need to do my taxes (W-2's, 1099's, etc.), I run TT.

- If I owe the IRS, I wait until the first week of April to submit (electronically). This gives me the opportunity to mail a return if there are problems with the electronic submission

- If the IRS owe me (hasn't happend in 25 years), I submit ASAP.

I will, some time > Is it safe to buy Turbo Tax 2011? That is, has Washington stopped
