Update troubles

Hi,

I have the Australian version 7.41 I think it is after a couple of updates and it works fine with about 5 years of our books on it.

I have just bought a new bigger HD and want to upgrade to a Quicken 2003 I had bought new some time ago but never wanted to face the upgrade problems with it, so it is still unused and ready to go. Even now I am not looking forward to going up to 7.5 then 7.6 then 2002 then finally to 2003.

I have been looking for my original QB 7 CD but for the life of me can't find it. As I said I have it still running fine on the current HD but want to get it and the upgrade onto the bigger drive.

As I still have all my registrations, group and other numbers can I somehow get another copy of 7 so I can upgrade?

May sound naive but I have looked everywhere and can't find it as well as the manual which was with the CD.

Is there any help out there for me please?

Hi, Rock.

I have no familiarity at all with the AU or any non-US version of Quicken, but...WHY do you need to "upgrade" at all? Why not simply install the 2003 version on the new HD, then let it convert your old data fileset as it loads it from the old source into the new Quicken. Then save the converted file onto your new HD (or wherever you choose) and go from there, with no need to look back. And no need for your older CD or documentation.

In the US, at least, each new year's version of Quicken is a complete package. If it finds an older Quicken during installation, it simply uninstalls the old before installing the new - while preserving a copy of the data fileset, of course, then converting the data for use in the updated Quicken.

As I recall, several years ago (in the prior millennium), Quicken was available in both upgrade and full versions each year. But that has not been the case here in a long time. All we see on the store shelves are full versions; no upgrade versions anymore. Check the box for your Quicken 2003; it probably doesn't care whether any earlier version is installed.

The only fly in this ointment is that the format of the data fileset has evolved over the years, and some very old data cannot be successfully imported into much-later versions. If the 2003 version cannot import your old data, then you might need to install an interim version temporarily to provide a bridge for just that limited purpose. I've not seen this problem personally, but the problem and solution have been reported here many times.

Let us know what you learn. Others will be interested, I'm sure.

Thank you RC.

Yes the new 2003 is an upgrade because when I tried ti install it on the new drive, it said it couldn't find a registered version so it shut down. Mind you, I didn't have the old drive connected with the running version of 7.4 which I have so maybe if it found that it would have gone on. I will go and try that as soon as I get the time.

I ran the old version last night and it said it was 7.4 for windows and I have the Reg, Serial and Group numbers which show on the panel.

Do you happen to know if there are other quicken places I can go on the net to try some help as I am up the creek at least $300 for the 2003 version if I can't use it.

If I can't find my original 7.4 CDs and as my version is Australian with its GST tax, I guess I am stuck with having to have an Aussie new one, otherwise I would buy the cheaper US early version which sometimes come up on Ebay then upgrade from that.

It is such a pain. I wonder if there is a conversion from QB 7.4 to MYOB as they seem to be much more user friendly. Ever since I started QB years ago, it has been a pain to upgrade. They seem absolutely paranoid about whether the copy is genuine so make it so hard for those of us who are straight.

Anyway I'm rambling now...

I will go and hook up the old drive to see if it finds it this time.

I would appreciate any more help please as I wanted to start the new version on Jan 1.

Thanks

Well I hooked up the old drive with the working 7.4 on it, but when trying to setup the 2003 upgrade it said it couldn't find a registered copy and canceled again.

I wonder what files it looks for to see whether or not there is a version there. If it goes to the registry I'm stuffed but I wonder if I copy the entire INET folder over to the new one to see if it will recognize it then upgrade.

Anyone with any ideas on how to do this?

Thanks

Hi, Rock.

Sorry, but as I said, I have no experience at all with non-US versions of Quicken. There are several Aussies in this newsgroup, though, so maybe one of them will spot this thread and contribute. If you don?t get a response in a day or two, you might start a new thread with a Subject that mentions Australia and see if that attracts the right kind of attention.

Many upgrade versions of programs will allow the upgrade if we just let it "see" the CD for the qualifying version, but that won't help in your case since that CD is what you are missing. My only remaining suggestion is to see if you can find a qualifying CD on eBay for a price low enough to make it worthwhile to get that and use it to get past Quicken 2003's upgrade "gatekeeper".

Good luck!

To the best of my knowledge, Quicken has never had any versions like 7.41, 7.5 or 7.6. But I do notice that the Australian version of Quickbooks mentions similar versiions.

It sounds to me like you are in the wrong group; I think you need to post your question in some (Australian?) Quickbooks group.

Yes I wish there was one. This seems to be the only one I can find.

I think it was originally 7.0 then after a few upgrades it ended up as 7.4 then changed to 2002 I think and follows the year now.

Thanks anyway

Happy Christmas

Yes, I agree, I thought of that and looked on Ebay but I think most of the cheaper ones are the US ones and I am not sure whether they will work as a bridge from my early one to my 2003. One good prospect through, it seems once I get the 2003 going, it won't be so bad to upgrade to later ones if I need to.

I will start another thread with Australia in the title as it may help some.

You've been great, thanks..
