Australian version upgrade help

Hi,

This has been in another thread for a while, but I think as it is an Australian version issue it will hopefully get more attention from any Aussies in the group.

Anyway..

I have the Australian version 7.4 after a couple of updates and it works fine on my old c; drive with XP Pro. It has about 5 years of our books on it.

I have just bought a new bigger HD and want to upgrade to Quicken 2003 I had bought new some time ago but never wanted to face the upgrade problems with it so it is still unused and ready to go. Even now I am not looking forward to going up to 7.5 then 7.6 etc., then 2002 then finally to 2003. Whew!!

I have misplaced my original QB 7 CD and for the life of me can't find it, altho' I have not stopped looking as it must be somewhere. As I still have my serial, rego, group and other numbers, how can I get to use my upgrade?

I added the old C: drive with QB 7.4 on it as an external drive and then tried to use the 2003 Upgrade but is said it couldn't find a registered version then canceled the setup. Truth is, I DID have a registered version but it was on another drive.

Is there a way I can get the Upgrade to 'see' my current QB so it will give me the upgraded version on my new C" drive? Maybe I can copy some files over to the new C:Drive so it can 'see' them??!!

If, not, it has been suggested that if I can buy cheap enough a version that will take my 7.4 data from Ebay, then maybe that will get me off the hook. But, why should I have to spend more.

Well well well....

I found the CD didn't I? Yes I did and so I have set up all my current data on the new drive okay.

Now I have to work out how to get my 7.4 data to 2003!!

Any ideas?

In US versions just opening the "old" file (set) with the new program will: a) Save the old data set in a new BACKUP directory b) Convert the old file set to the new format c) Save the converted data set under the old name, but possibly with a new extension. Some people have metioned that it might be necessary if you convert from a very old version, to first convert to a version from a year in between the very old one and the current one. Also, be sure to "validate" the very old version using its Quicken program (in your case 7.4?). That would prevent innocuous corruption (that does not oher 7.4) to be fatal for the current version.

I'm sorry, but i'ts not clear to me what you are trying to do? If your new HD is now your primary C: with XPpro installed you should re-install QB on to it. That will register it in the Registry. Use your backed up files on your old drive and copy them back to QB and take it from there. (Sorry don't use QB only Quicken personal, so I dont know name's or extention for backup/saved data files. Thanks Han, but is all rather involved isn't it?

Surely they like every other program I use, could have made it easier and more consumer friendly.

I have also checked and altho there are conflicting methods, it seems I have to go from 7.5 to 7.5 then to 2001 then to my 2003 converting the data at every step.

I only have my current 7.4 and my 2003 upgrade so I'm not sure how I am to do all that!

Anyway, I'll keep looking for 'the' way I guess.

Thanks Frederick,

I have my 7.4 QG Pro on my new XP HD now with all my data so that is fine, it is how to upgrade my data to 2003 that is my task now as it is not as one would expect when doing an upgrade. There are steps involved as they have changed the core programs.
