US Savings Bonds

My daughter (3 years old) has received numerous US Savings Bonds (Series EE). I want to put them in Quicken so I don't forget about them. What's the best way in Quicken 2004 Deluxe?

Click on the "Accounts" icon and select add new account. Name it "So & So's US Savings Bonds" Jim M.

In Q2003, I set up an investment account. I enter each bond as a separate investment within that account.

In the register, I enter the date of purchase. In the memo section, I enter the serial number of each bond.. I name each bond US Bond YYYYMM with Y for the year and M for the month. When I am asked to enter the symbol during the "new investment" dialogue, I enter SBYYMM where YY is the last two digits of the year.

Every six months, I use the Savings Bond Wizard to determine the new price of each bond and enter that into Quicken.

Hope this helps

You should consider the Savings Bond Wizard instead.

But then you won't have them in Quicken with the ability to report on them, keep them as part of your overall assets, use reminders to cash them in, etc. So, moral of the story, is use BOTH the wizard (to obtain the current value that probably flucuates assuming the fixed series EE bonds haven't kicked in yet), as well as using the wizard to get the update to date valuation which you can then use to update your balance in Q.

I'm curious on the actual mechanics you use to track your bonds... as we have several dozen EE, and HH -

I just was playing after reading your msg, and setup a new account, made it Brokerage, and then added bond1 and bond2 - no ticker though.

Now the account has 2 line items, but what do you fudge for either shares, cost basis, etc to actually track the bonds..... and how/what do you do change to show the increase in market value ? | quote/price | shares | market value | cost basis |

BTW - there has been a lot of past chatter on this subject for years - Do a Google/Groups search for Quicken savings bonds Also, as I read in one of past msgs, Quicken has suggestions in the HELP section, (at least my Q2004) Search for Bonds, and Adding US....
