What is Quicken used for?

It's no doubt that they are hard sells indeed. However I believe it's illegal to send unwanted stuff and bill unless the person sends it back. The person can rightfully consider it a gift. I don't remember how they "bill" you, CC perhaps. Simple, give them a credit card with only $10 of available credit left. Let's seem them get the $70 our of that! ;-) Ah but yeah, some CC's let you go over your limit...

There's always the book: "Quicken for Dummies" Probably not a bad place to start.

Here's one that I dont' think I've seen in the thread.....it's fun! For those anal retentive folks like me, I get a charge out of keeping my financial affairs in order.

My wife and friends think I'm obsessed with Quicken, and to a certain extent it's true I think.

Once I get the bills paid and accounts reconciled I tend to start fiddling with the budget, checking out my investments, thinking about refinancing the mortgage, projecting expenses and income, planning optimal tax strategies, generating reports and graphs, etc. etc. I even sometimes find myself on Usenet reading the newsgroup :)

I would end up spending several hours with the damn program, so I started using it more frequently thinking I would spend less time with each session -- didn't work. Now I try to limit myself to one session a week, and one focussed task at a session.

My wife is the opposite. If there are few pennies that don't reconcile, she just throws in a balance adjustment, while I look on in horror :)

Mark - isn't it amazing that one of the "draws" of Q was that it was supposed to save time in your financial affairs! I spend MUCH MORE time 'playing' with Q and the #s...ensuring the categories are perfect, names are spelled correctly, etc. Wierd.

Heheh, I'm with you both. Maybe we should start a 12-step group for us Quicken fanatics. :-) Actually, I think this software makes managing finances fun. Uh oh, I see the men in white coats coming with straight jacket in hand.... ;-)

I don't know about a "charge" but I do like having things all organized & in order without question.
