During my long period of unemployment I was forced to take early withdrawals from my IRA to make premium payments on health insurance for my family. I did so with the understanding that with the correct form and documentation, some of that expense would be returned to me by the IRS.
I filed my taxes at the end of February 2010. I received a CP18 notice in early April which said, to paraphrase: "your return is in review, if we have any questions we'll get back to you and you must answer within 30 days". Concerned about missing some mail and possibly that 30 day deadline, I've been calling the IRS every month and continue to be told "your return is in exams, it's been selected for review but the review has not yet occurred".
It has been almost 4 months since I received the CP18. I assume the "exam" is an audit to look through the large stack of documentation I provided in support of the HCTC claim. I spent several thousand dollars on health care premiums and the refund is necessary to help us meet current expenses. Summary: I am eager and possible getting impatient!
My question to the group: Can anyone comment on the process - specifically, what I might expect regarding duration?
Thanks in advance.
