I contribute to a number of animal welfare and rescue organizations, not all of which are US based. Are non US organizations legitimate deductions? Eg SOI Dogs, Takis Animal Rescue (Greece), let?s Adopt ( Spain).

Contributions to most foreign organizations are not deductible. There are exceptions in the tax treaties with Canada, Mexico, and Israel, but to deduct a contribution to an organization in one of those countries you have to have income from that country.

Relative to Canada: Canada source income is not required if the charitable contribution is made to a Canadian college or university in which the US taxpayer or member of the taxpayer's family is enrolled or was enrolled.

You may want to look into whether there are legitimate U.S. Charities (i.e. deductible) that you can donate to so that the money ends up where you want it to go.
