You've a good memory, Mark. Did have the problem and solved it back then by using something called eternal september as a free newserve. But that one seems to be defunct now, so finally found another: news.aioe.org
Now to catch up.....!
Just FYI for others reading this, news.eternal-september.org (formerly known as motzarella) is still operating and still free, I use it daily. Not sure why it stopped working for you, Harlan, but glad you found an alternative (one of many available, I'm sure).

Hi, Harlan; I also started back on MTM late last year after a several- years hiatus.
Yes, ES is still running just fine for me. I only frequent a few groups, and none with high bandwidth, so I hope this stays around. Joe
