How much narrative is necessary when supplying more info to the gov?

Below I asked what documents were necessary to send in response to the State's demand for more information. I got a lot of good help. Thanks.

How much narrative is necessary? Do I just throw it all in a box and let them figure it out. Or do I identify each document (perhaps 150 pages in total) and detail where my figures come from? Or something in-between?

They allow about 6" x 6" for the explanation; presumably I use that to refer to addition sheets of explanation?

I'd correlate each group of supporting info w/ each line item on the return. I'd only add narrative if it seemed to be required; receipts, canceled checks, etc., are self-explanatory.

If and as needed, sure...
