HSA form 8889 with spouse contributing in 2008 for 2007

Feb 29, 2008 1 Replies

How should the following situation reported on forms 8889?

TP & spouse had an HDHP and a family HSA account for all of 2007. Both are over 55 and they file a joint return. No employer is involved.

Contribution to the family HSA account was $6,450 for 2007.

In January 2008, spouse opens a self-only HSA account and contributes $800 in it as the over-55 additional contribution for 2007.

So the 2007 contributions for the couple total $7,250, all of which should be deductible. Presumably, a second form 8889 is needed for spouse's HSA account. But what should go in Part I?

I thought the instructions for the form addressed this? See Page 2.
