Now the IRS wants $10,125.00

Today, both my wife and I received bills from the IRS saying we owed $10,125 as a result of a false credit to our account of $10,125.00. This is probably somehow related to the mystery letter we received a week ago that I posted last week and which is copied here.

"I received a mystery letter from the IRS last Saturday that said I had a mistake on my 2009 return. The income, deductions, taxes, and refund due numbers on the letter were exactly the numbers on my return.

I called IRS on last Monday, after a weekend wondering what I had done wrong, and after several minutes the person I talked to said that somehow the IRS had issued a refund check for $10,000.00 more than was due and indicated on my return. She said that my return was fine, just someone had keypunched in an extra $10,000.00. Somehow the IRS discovered the mistake and cancelled the check. To correct things in their computer system, they had to issue a correction notice, even though what came to me was just a 100% verification of my own numbers.

The person said that if I did possibly still get the wrong check just to attach a copy of their letter to me, adding an explanation like I just gave here, and send the check back to them. The person also said I should get the correct refund within 6 weeks at the most and to contact them if I don't get the correct refund in 6 weeks. So now I am waiting to see what actually happens. "

Well, now I have found out that things have not been fixed and I guess I have to call IRS again next Monday to see how they fix this screw- up. If I only had the $10,125 check that was apparently issued, I would gladly send it back, along with a bill for my consulting services which I bill at $50.00 per hour.

Am I the only person who has this sort of screw-up dealing with the IRS?

Of course not...just chill, keep good records of who you talk to and when including getting contact information, etc.

They screwed up on a refund on ours w/ an amended return and altho it took a few months, eventually it was straightened out.

What about the "finders - keepers, losers - weepers doctrine?

If the IRS screws up and does not fix it as they said they would, you may consider a taxpayer's assistance order with the IRS' Taxpayer Advocate Service. You can file form 911 or call the IRS and they can file it for you over the phone. 866-250-5077 (this number may be good if you were already assigned a advocate - I am not sure.) An individual would be assigned to act as your liaison.

But this process would also take time and the Advocate Office is backed up.

A bit more patience is probably the best advice.
