I received a mystery letter from the IRS last Saturday that said I had a mistake on my 2009 return. The income, deductions, taxes, and refund due numbers on the letter were exactly the numbers on my return.
I called IRS on last Monday, after a weekend wondering what I had done wrong, and after several minutes the person I talked to said that somehow the IRS had issued a refund check for $10,000.00 more than was due and indicated on my return. She said that my return was fine, just someone had keypunched in an extra $10,000.00. Somehow the IRS discovered the mistake and cancelled the check. To correct things in their computer system, they had to issue a correction notice, even though what came to me was just a 100% verification of my own numbers. The person said that if I did possibly still get the wrong check just to attach a copy of their letter to me, adding an explanation like I just gave here, and send the check back to them. The person also said I should get the correct refund within 6 weeks at the most and to contact them if I don't get the correct refund in 6 weeks. So now I am waiting to see what actually happens.
