Old Stock Prices

I have stock I got in 1975. I can't find my paperwork for then, but I need to know the price. I asked the company; they said to ask the transfer agent. And vice-versa. Any ideas as to how I can find the price? Perhaps the NYSE listings from an old newspaper such as the NYTimes (to which I subscribe), but I have no idea as how to get access to them.

The following link has about 58 years of data. Just change /IBM/ibm/ to some other stock symbol. When the page opens, just enter your date or date range.

There are several website that can give you historical stock prices, as long as you know the data you want the price for.

Here is one that was the top result of a Google search, looking at IBM on 2/4/1975.

Looks like finance.yahoo.com also has a historical stock price feature and likely many others. You may need to check carefully, because some sites (like NASDAQ) only go back 10 years or so.

I suspect the tricky part would be to figure out the date when you got the stock, if you don't have any paperwork on it anymore.

If you have access to the online NYTimes, check out the TimesMachine link. You can view any issue of the New York Times since 1851.

None of the price lookup sites went back far enough, but the NYTimes archive did. As far as the exact date goes, I know within a few days what it was, so the IRS will never know if I am off by a slight amount -- unless one of you snitches.
