Sales tax on internet orders?

NY has a 4% sales tax, and my county has a 3.5% tax. In the past companies with a presence in NY charged 7.5% tax.

The last two things I bought charged 4% tax. Was I overcharged in the past, undercharged now, or has something changed?

The sellers goofed. NY charges sales tax based on the destination to which the goods are delivered. It's a pain in the neck since the seller has to break down sales by county, and also by 17 cities with their own tax rates.

Hmm, and people say CA is tax-unfriendly. Here, if you have no business presence in the destination jurisdiction (no facility, no personnel even temporary, etc) you only have to collect the CA state-wide rate, although as a courtesy to the customer you can collect the local (county/city) tax if you wish; otherwise the consumer is responsible for the local use tax.

To the OP: are these well known-companies, can you share their names? Are these the same companies that previously charged you the full amount?

I am vaguely aware of some changes recently regarding how companies like Amazon are to collect taxes in various states even when they don't have a physical presence, but I don't know the details.

The last one was Best Buy. I am not certain but I bought something from BB 2 months ago, and that might have been the other one. So maybe they are both BB. There is actually a BB store in my county, though these purchased were entirely on line.
