Hi gang, I just want to get an opinion on whether I am doing this right:
Taxpayer's daughter got married lat in the year. Taxpayer supported daughter all year and want to take daughter as dependent. Taxpayer's son-in law made about 20K in 2011.
It looks to me that in order to take child as a dependent the daughter and SIL must file "married-filing separately." There is a significant tax differnce for the SIL if he files separately, he wouldn't be filing married "just to get a refund."
Also, I guess that filing separately not only allows parents to take child, but also get educational credits as well.
Following both filing methods through still seem to result in lower taxes if the kids file separately.
Do the experts think I am barking up the right tree here? Is there any other way of looking at this?
