Travel Expense Deductions

I work a 14 day on, 14 day off rotation for an offshore drilling company in the Gulf of Mexico. For the past three years I have deducted the mileage on my car for driving back and forth to various ports of departure to our location offshore in US waters. Now our rig is in Mexican waters, drilling for the Mexican state owned petroleum company, and we are expected to be drilling in various locations in Mexican waters for another

3 years. I'm interested in flying to our port of depature to Mexico. Will I be able to deduct the cost of an airplane ticket?

No. It's commuting and therefore not deductible.

[There is no exception for unusually long commutes.]
