new 14 digit UPC codes

Will RMS eventually support the newer 14 digit UPC codes? I own a sporting goods store and the new Nike footwear is coming with 14 digit UPCs as opposed to the 12 digit ones.

The barcode scanner decodes the barcode and sends the characters. RMS doesn't have any decoding capability. The only requirement I'm aware of for POS software to be compliant with the Sunrise 2005 Initiative is that the field to store the barcode number be at least 14 characters, and RMS allows 25 in the ItemLookupCode field. So if the scanner can decode the new UPC barcodes, it will send 14 characters to the computer to populate the itemlookup field. I've read that most scanners manufactured in the last few years have been Sunrise Initiative compliant. Call or email the scanner manufacturer, or check their website.

I'm sorry - it's past my bedtime. Here's a better answer.

If your scanner can't read the new Nike barcodes, you probably need a new scanner. It's the scanner, not RMS. Before buying a new scanner make sure it's "Sunrise Compliant".

Yes, but RMS will not print barcodes using the new Sunrise Initiative specs of UPCs with 14 digits instead of the 12 digit variety. Surely this capability will be available in the future....? I know I could use a variety of code 128, but is there not a new UPC spec that will allow for 14 digits? And if so, when will RMS use this?

Don't hold your breath. What you want can be done with Code 128, as you said, so since there's a workable solution, this would be very low on MS's priority list. If MS licenses the barcode module from a 3rd party, then a future major RMS release might include an updated barcode module.

There are certainly a lot of things I'd want them to work on before this. What do you need this capability for?
