Matrix Items/Lookup Codes

I'm somewhat new to RMS and have a question about matrix items and lookup codes. We are a clothing/footwear store. When I want to input one style of jeans in 10 different sizes, I believe I should use "Matrix Item".

It appears that there is only one "lookup code" for the entire style. Does this mean that when my cashier goes to checkout the customer who buys size

30, they have to scan the barcode/lookup code and then find the size 30? Shouldn't each size have its own lookup code to save time and to avoid the possibility of the cashier making a mistake on size?

In addition, is there anyway to have the lookup code generate automatically? It seems like I have to think of a unique code each time I enter in an item.

Finally, when I enter in the same style as a matrix and only need to input different sizes and/or colors, is there an easy way of doing this rather then entering each item seperatly?

Thank you!

Klawans,

Using the New Item Wizard will solve most of your problems.

There are several issues with creating styles this way how ever.

  1. Every time you create a style you have to re-enter your dimensions.
  2. Adding a new dimension to an existing style is cumbersome and time consuming.
  3. You don't have any control over how the Item Lookup Code is generated.

To solve these issues and a few more, a couple of companies have created add-ons to help facilitate the createion of Matrix Items. RMS Store - Matrix Plus

Both tools work well, Retail Realms product is a little more expensive but has been around for a while. RMS Stores product is newer, less expensive and is more customizable.

You can get the product through your RMS Partner, through the companies directly or you can contact our sales office at sales @ retail-pos.com. (just remove the spaces)

The matrix components have their own Item Lookup Code. The matrix class lookup (M code) is a list of all items in the matrix. You can call up the M code in POS or Manager to access the matrix grid, or enter the matrix component item directly to bypass the grid.

Our AutoGen utility can automate Item Lookup Code generation. Info at:

A modified version of our JumpStart utility could automate matrix import of your clothing and shoe products if your suppliers can provide the data in a standard file format. Contact jumpstart @ digitalretailer.com if you are interested.
