Using Random Weight UPC Bar Codes in RMS 1.3

I am wondering how to set-up inventory in RMS of beef that my vendor purchases from a butcher in bulk, say in 100 pound lots of T-Bones, that are then individually wrapped and UPC'ed by the butcher. The butcher is UPC labling them according to the standards of such as defined on page 188 where the first series of numbers identifies the product "T-Bone" and the next series is weight in 1/100's of a pound increments. The original PO is for 100 pounds of T-Bone and 100 pounds would be received as one lump sum receipt. Note that the store does not want to take in inventory all 89 packages of T-bone that are random weighted. They want the inventory of T-Bone to deplete as the wrapped packages are scanned - NOT WEIGHED - at the cash register. Suggestions??

It is a STANDARD Item (Not weighted) set the price to the actual price per pound set the ItemLookupcode to be "2PPPPP00000" where PPPPP is the 5 digit PLU - use leading zeros if needed in SO Manager, File/Configuration, Options, Item Options, select "Use Random price UPC Codes"

Say you have item PLU 12345 that costs 5.99 per pound

a 2 pound package should come out labeled

"21234501198" - I think there is also a check digit, but RMS ignores it...

When the above barcode is scanned, RMS will take the package price of

11.98 and divide it by the unit price of 5.99 and come up with a quantity of 2 (as in pounds)

I've never seen it set up so that the barcode can include the weight instead of the package price - I guess if you set the price to $1.00 it would work out the same, but then your quantity would be off...

Well, try playing around with the settings, but as far as I know RMS only works with embedded price barcodes. There is a knowledge base article on the subject that you might want to check out.

Glenn,

Thanks again for the reply. After some further research, it appears that the leading 2 is a UPC-A Standard indicating that the bar code was created using the "Random Weight" standard. As such, would your instructions work if we changed your instructions to read: in SO Manager, File/Configuration, Options, Item Options, select "Use Random Weight UPC Codes" ?

It seems reasonable, but again, I am a rookie and have no previous experience with RMS. Any confirmation / affirmation / shoot-down would be greatly appreciated!

There's only one option for Random UPC - I don't remember if it says Random Weight or Random Price, but in my experience it works with price

- give it a try though. There is also a random EAN Option, but that would require a different SKU format.

Page 170 of the SO Ver 1.3 User's Guide refers to "Random Weight UPC Codes-uttilize price embedded barcodes" just after "Random Weight EAN Codes". That is the extent of it. We are using "weight embedded bar codes" which I understand not to be that big of a deal???? I'll try. If it works, the other issue is to ignore the leading "2" which my client understands to be a Micrologic Scanner set-up/workaround. Thanks again Glenn! YOur timely guidance is priceless!!
