Is it possible to scan a bar code without having to press the enter key to make a transaction? It seems counter-productive to do it this way

You should be able to program your scanner to add an 'ENTER' as a suffix to the scan. That is the way we do it.

Some scanners require programming to scan an item and be ready for the next item, having populating the cash register with the item by scan.
Your scanner can be tweaked to perform the function below, by following your scanner manual. They usually specify what default settings your scanners have out of the box; and programming pages with things to scan that program the scanner gun.
Ex: A Symbol USB scanner out of the box, will be able to scan many different barcodes or UPCs with a "carriage return" included in the default.
