Your barcode scanner will probably read 12 digits from a standard UPC barcode. Adding 00 to the front of the barcode will not do the trick.

To understand what heppens, open notepad and scan any UPC barcode with your scanner. You will see that the scanner reads 12 digits. If your suppliers are sending you 10 digit codes, they are leaving off the "smaller" check digits, and they will not be adequate to work with your scanner.

You must enter the "smaller digits" before and afer the barcode on the product. All the scanner is doing is entering the full 12 digit number the same as if you typed it in manually.

Your partner may have valid reasons for recommending a 12 digit code, so don't take this as gospel - I don't know anything about your unique situations or your suppliers products...

This is all in layman's terms - if you're a stickler for accuracy and completeness, Google "Barcode Formats" - you should find quite a few sites that include the specifications for the UPC Format.

UPC format looks like this:

X MMMMM SSSSS C

"X" is a 'header' - in some contexts it has meaning - for example in a deli, when they weigh an item and print a barcode with the price, the header is "2" and the register is supposed to know that signifies a special code. For 'standard' items it's usually "0"

"MMMMM" is a manufacurer number assigned by some standards body. All of a manufacturer's items should have the same code here.

"SSSSS" is the unique identifier for the product within the manufacturer's code.

"C" is a check digit - there's a formula for calculating this.

RMS doesn't care about the format - as long as the item lookup code (or alias) is unique, it just doesn't matter. The only issue would be if your barcode scanner is set up so that it won't read UPC codes without the header & check digit.

The other issue would be if the manufacturer is not consistent. If they sometimes inclued the check digit and other times leave it off, RMS is not going to be able to find the item correctly.

As far as Item lookup codes are concerned, if you just scan the item into the item lookupcode field or as an alias, RMS will find it at POS - it is just a text string at that point and RMS doesn't care what format it has.

What do you mean by 'my suppliers are sending me 10 digit'? Are you talking about the preprinted codes on the packages, or some sort of item catalog that you want to import? What you really care about is the code you are going to scan, so if the packages only have 10 digits, that's what you want to use (proper format or not) - again, scan the barcode; it may actually include the header and check digit even if they are not printed in the human readable part...

This is the most likely scenario in my experience. The label will not have a leading zero or the check digit printed, but your barcode scanner will read them...

Scan the barcode into Notepad/Word and see how many digits you get...

"> again, scan the barcode;
