Current end of day stock prices don't work?

Hey all,

At the end of the day, I can't get the current day prices to update. I converted from Quicken 2005 to 2007 Premier hoping there was a new site the newer program was getting the info from. But apparently not.

I ALWAYS get this message - "the server is not responding properly, please try again later".

This has been happening to me for about 18 months now (first in Quicken

2005, now 2007). In March 2006, Quicken support staff told me their quote site was broken and they were working on fixing it. No luck so far.

Historical quotes work fine, but I don't want to wait until the next day to see what my investments did.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Hal

I download end of day prices for my stocks every day. The only time it hasn't worked was last Friday evening when there was no response from the server. I'm using Q2005. Something on your PC must be blocking the transaction.

John,

thanks. At least now I know it's not the website. What operating system are you using? Do you have a firewall?

You've got me thinking a lot more about this John. I'm wondering if there is a security setting I've got in Windows that is blocking this. Any thoughts?

I am using Windows XP PRO and the Comcast version of the McAfee firewall. I do not have McAfee's privacy service installed. If you have a firewall installed, see if it has a log file that would identify when it blocks something.

John,

I too am using XP Pro. My firewall is the Windows firewall. Although the event logging seems to be enabled, it hasn't created the log file (pfirewall.log). I tried changing my cookie settings and that didn't do anything. I also disabled the firewall to see what would happen. No change, still wasn't able to get the quotes. McAfee is my virus protection software. I turned that off too and did a quote update. No luck.

I'm, stymied.!

Have you registered the software with Quicken? I believe that is a requirement for one step update to work.

Can you do a one step update with none of the boxes checked? That updates the software and financial instution list if any updates are available.

Thanks for the ideas John,

I am registered and have been using Quicken for many years. My one step update works on everything else just fine. All the bank info, credit cards, AND even historical stock quotes. The only thing that isn't working is the current day, end of day quotes.

When I started having problems with this many, many months ago, I'd try updating the quotes several times in the evening. At first, I might get through on the 5th or 6th try. For about the last 8-12 months, I haven't been able to get through no matter how many times I try.

I was thinking maybe the quote site was just so busy early in the evening, I'd try much later at night. It doesn't make a difference anymore.

The one thing that might be different than most users' is that I've got literally, hundreds and hundreds of symbols I'm updating.

Thanks again Hal

I think that I read somewhere that the request is in the form of a URL. You may be exceeding the maximum line length. Go into the setup for online stock requests and uncheck half of your stocks. Then try the update again. If it is the number of stocks that is the problem, you should be able to experimentally determine what the maximum number is and then bring down the quotes in several passes. I have 36 stocks in my request.

John,

I'll give that a shot tonight when I get home and let you know. Thanks.

John,

You got it! Your figured out what the support group at Quicken couldn't. That was the solution.

Thank you.

So how many securities were you originally trying to download quotes for? And what number were you finally able to get to download in a single attempt?
