What do I do about missing delivery confirmations?

Apr 14, 2006 3 Replies

I filed 6 income tax returns a week ago; NYS and Federal for me and my 2 children. 4 delivery receipts came back a few days ago, but one NYS and one Federal are missing. They both involve refunds. What do I do about this? I can prove I mailed them . Do I just wait; contact them, refile, or what? Any need to do it before 4/15? Never had this happen before!

I would suggest in the future you just save the cost of return receipt and just pay for certified. The certified receipt is all you need to prove mailing. Now all you can do is call the tax agency and ask if the return has been received or not.

Since they both involve refunds, you can go to the IRS and NYS web sites and use their "Where's My Refund" pages. If the returns are listed you'll know they got them.

Clearly at this point you can't do anything before the filing deadline, but there was no need to do so. All you really need to be able to prove is that you MAILED them, not that they were received. Anyway, if you still haven't received the return receipts, and want to know if they were received or not, you can check on the US Postal Services website,

and enter the tracking number where indicated. They keep data online for six months.
